TRAFFIC RULES IN DELAWARE

Don’t let a traffic ticket spoil your NASCAR experience. Whether you're a Delaware local or visiting from out of state, knowing the basic driving rules can help you avoid any unnecessary trouble. Here’s a simple overview to keep you safe and legal while navigating around Dover.

Driving side

Like the rest of the U.S., vehicles in Delaware drive on the right-hand side of the road.

Speed limits

  • Residential areas: 25–30 mph
  • State highways: 50–65 mph
  • Interstates: Up to 70 mph, depending on location. Always obey posted speed signs and adjust for traffic or weather conditions.

Traffic signals

Obey all traffic lights and signs. Right turns on red are permitted after a full stop, unless signage says otherwise. Always yield to pedestrians and any oncoming traffic when turning.

Driving under the influence

Delaware enforces strict DUI laws. The legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit is 0.08% for drivers aged 21 and up, with zero tolerance for underage drivers. DUI offenses can result in heavy fines, license suspension, and even jail time.

Seat belt requirements

Seat belts are mandatory for all occupants, front and back. Delaware police can issue citations for failure to wear a seat belt.

Right of way - you must yield to:

  • Pedestrians in crosswalks
  • Vehicles that have already stopped at or are entering an intersection. Be extra alert near the speedway, where pedestrian traffic can be heavy on race days.

If you’re stopped by police in Delaware

  • Pull over safely: Use your turn signal and stop on the right shoulder or in a safe, well-lit area.
  • Stay in your vehicle: Keep your seat belt on, hands visible on the wheel, and interior light on if it’s dark.
  • Follow instructions: Wait until the officer speaks to you before reaching for anything. Provide your license, registration, and proof of insurance only when asked.
  • Be respectful: Stay calm, cooperative, and avoid arguing.
  • If ticketed: Sign the citation if asked. It’s not an admission of guilt – just acknowledgment you received it.
  • Know your rights: You can ask if you’re free to go. You aren’t required to answer unrelated questions beyond ID and documentation.
  • Document the stop: If anything seems inappropriate, note the officer’s name, badge number, and vehicle. Complaints can be filed later if needed.
